Staying Fit During Pregnancy
No matter if you’re pregnant or not, it’s important to stay active in some way. There are so many ways to accomplish that. Zumba, spin class, pilates, kick boxing, tabata, HIIT workouts, and so many more are available online or at local gyms. My workout of choice is yoga and it’s perfect for me.
I’m a independent person, meaning I like to do a lot of things by myself to avoid embarrassment. Yoga can be practiced in small groups, large classes, or completely by yourself. I’ve practiced on the beach (check out how cool that class was), at the gym on Camp Foster, and lately I’ve been doing some of my own flows at home on our balcony.
I love how yoga is low impact, so I don’t feel like I’m going to keel over half way through. I see improvements in the poses I do and get to stretch every part of my body. I don’t have to worry about doing something to harm the little baby growing away inside me. Yoga actually helps tone your body by making you control every movement you make. I suck at control when my muscles are working hard in an area I’m weak, so I’ll just fumble through the motions.
Have I mentioned that yoga is actually a ton of fun? You can find a ton of studios that do hot yoga or even aerial yoga! It’s on my list to try a class once I feel more confident in my body strength. The practice and flows are as fun as you make them, so why not do something crazy with it.
I practice in whatever loose clothing I have. I wouldn’t recommend jeans or a skirt because you’ll need full range of motion in your lower half. I purchased my yoga mat back in college and recently ordered a foam block and strap. The foam block helps you in poses where you need to balance on one leg and can’t reach your feet. The strap helps with basic stretches when your hamstrings are really tight.
I did a yoga certification from Expert Rating when they were having a special on class prices. I had basic knowledge of what yoga was, but this class helped me further my understanding. Fun fact: you can practice specific poses to improve certain aspects of your health. Chakaras and their importance were also covered in the course.
